Hi, my name is David John Shields and I’m a Sunderland lad. I was born in 1987 to parents David and Gail. I have an older brother and sister, Michael and Heather. In 1997 I was at Seaburn with my dad when I had an accident on my bike. I was badly hurt and in a coma for four months. When I came out of the coma it became evident that the injuries were severe and that my life and the lives of my family were changed forever.
I left hospital in February 1998 and began attending the Barbara Priestman School in Meadowside, Sunderland. In 2006, after eight years at the school, it was time for me to move on. I went north of the Tyne to the NorthernCountiesCollege, part of the Percy Hedley Foundation. It was there that I learnt life skills such as Road Safety, Community Skills and Social Skills. I was there for three years and in 2009 at the age of 22 it was time for me to move on.
Now an adult, it was time to make my own way in the world. I was looking for ways to occupy my time while thinking about my future. My social worker Sarah mentioned NDRC, a day care centre for people with disabilities. We arranged a visit and I went along to see what they were about. I was pleasantly surprised to see a lot of different things going on and everyone seemed to be very happy and friendly. After the visit I didn’t want to look anywhere else, I knew I wanted to go to NDRC.
In 2009 I started to attend the NDRC day care centre in Cork St, Sunderland. I began to spend a lot of time in the computer room talking to tutor Ron about all sorts of stuff. I would watch him when he was working on different projects and he would explain what he was doing and how he was doing it. We began working together, making short movies using Windows Movie Maker. They mainly involved the members from the centre during their day to day activities or involving holiday trips to the Calvert Trust centre in Kielder.
In early 2013 I saw a Youtube video of someone flying a quadcopter with a video camera attached and I thought it was great. I spoke to mam and dad about it and we agreed it might be a good idea to buy something similar. We did a search online and found what we wanted and had it delivered. It was easier to fly than we had first thought and with practice it got more interesting to perform new techniques.
More recently I have discovered Adobe After Effects and Adobe Premiere, and I am learning how to edit videos which will be housed on this website. I also love JibJab – here is an example of a video I made: https://www.jibjab.com/view/make/youre_the_one_that_i_want/f6ac15c8-7fc3-4a6f-ab8f-5569c8bcb9d5
I also hope this website will help me make some new friends with similar interests or people who have found themselves in a similar situation to me.
